Recently, the Regent Computing Department hosted a Pi-Top Coding workshop for Year 5 & 6 students. Students had the opportunity to jump straight into the “learning pit” to code in Python on special Raspberry Pi devices called Pi-Tops. They had to code and debug physical outputs such as LEDs, buzzers and switches, learning about Python syntax and libraries.
When students learn by practicing and working with peers, they develop a set of skills that are needed in the industry. When in the workforce, these skill sets will help them in finding the best solution to problems and in implementing them; this is exactly what happens in project-based and peer-learning education.
Learning circuits in Science is one thing, but coding a computer to operate a circuit is another. Regent ensures high educational standards and in Computing; we certainly stretch their limits with a relevant and rigorous curriculum that is positioning its students to be on the technological forefront of the 21st Century. The PiTop coding workshop was challenging, but the students flourished in their love of learning & resilience, especially when trying to problem solve why the device wasn’t working. Challenges come; what matters is how we bounce back.
Clearly, the benefits of learning to code extend well beyond knowing how to create an app or website. Of course, not all students will go on to become programmers or coders, but all students will gain valuable 21st-century skills & character strengths that can be transferred to many different areas of their lives.
